T. $ Green - Interview
Tony (T. Money) Green, was born and raised in Detroit, MI. As a bassist and producer he has lived an extraordinary life and left a legacy behind that most of you will recognize once you hear it from him. From P-Funk and the Dramatics. To Dr. Dre and Warren G. He's just one of the guys that hit the right notes and the right time. A little while ago we sat down with T. Money to ask him a little bit about a few of his memories from a variety of projects that he has been involved with.
L.F.- How old are you and how long have you been playing music?
T.$.- I first started playing music when I was 13 yrs. old. I tried to play three other instruments before the bass. The drums, lead guitar, and piano.
L.F.- When did you decide to make a career in music? How did this come about?
T.$.- Well back in Mumford High, playing in all the talent shows, I relized that this was it for me. I started a group called “Roadwork”, we became one of the fastest rising show bands in the early 70’s. This led up to me being discovered by the Dramatics.
L.F.- You’ve been involved in a pretty impressive list of projects over the years. For those who don’t know, could you tell us abou
t some of the projcects you have been involved in and the artists you have worked with over the years?
T.$.- Well, I played bass and/or was the musical director for the Dramatics for 18 yrs. I had the same job discreption for Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Oleata Adams, Robbie Robertson, Warren G, The Five Footaz, The Twinz, George Clinton, and many more I can’t remember.
L.F.- What inspires you and your work?
T.$.- Calmness....I don’t like shit starting or shit going on when I’m working. My nerves are bad as hell.
L.F.- What has been your most memorable experience through out your career?
T.$.- Some of the most memorable moments were auditioning for the Dramatics. Playing a hundred bass lines for Dr. Dre when I first met him. Seeing the world and getting paid for it!
L.F.- What were the worst experiences that you have had during your career?
T.$.- When crack destroyed the vibe of the Dramatics and when people started getting beat up and killed when I was at Death Row!
L.F.- Is there anyone who has been a mentor to you over the years?
T.$.- No one has really mentored me in the past. However Ron Banks of the Dramatics did early on and even though he was a lot younger, Dr. Dre kinda mentored me when I worked with him.
L.F.- What have you been listening to?
T.$.- Lately I have been listening to a lot of my own music. I never look at t.v. or listen to the radio.
L.F.- How do you feel about the current state of the music industry?
T.$.- The current state of the music biz is fucked, but I feel a change coming. And thank GOD for the internet.
L.F.- What advice would you give to an aspiring musician?
T.$.- To never quit....Try to keep a clear head. Stay away from people that don’t want to see you shine!!
