Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones
Do Thangs
Aceyalone is getting ready to release his latest project, Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones. This will be Aceyalone’s tenth solo album. This album pushes the boundaries of what hip-hop was, is, and can be. The concept is inspired by 60’s and 70’s old funk and soul, the Motown Era and real R & B music. Aceyalone and producer Bionic will take you on a journey that will make you want to get up and dance. The album drops March 31st, 2009, on Decon Records. We just caught up with Aceyalone to talk to him a little bit about the new album.
La Famiglia- Is there anything from the era of the music that influenced this album that you love that you feel is missing from the music today?
Aceyalone- I don’t know if there is anything I love that is missing. I like phase of them creating the music and having that new sound for themselves. I watch my documentaries and behind the scenes…and I can kind of compare there struggles coming up in the music industry to ours. It’s a little over saturated now, so it’s not as pure at heart. The power of the media can override a lot of people’s minds. And that’s something that wasn’t as fully potent then as it is now. I can’t really say that it’s something that’s missing, but it’s something that I can see and relate to.
La Famiglia- Are there any specific records of this era or vibe that you would recommend?
Aceyalone- I listen to music with an open ear. I like every kind of song and all kinds of music. I couldn’t say.
La Famiglia- Did you sit down and listen to any specific records during the recording process to help guide the vibe during the sessions?
Aceyalone- That’s one thing that people don’t know. That’s the type of music that I love and listen to. I love the oldies, original R & B, from the blues when it was coming up, original rock & roll, and of course reggae and jazz. A lot of those sounds were embedded because I listen to the music. Those rhythms are so tight but the beats are not brought out because the drumbeat was not the focal point back then. Just bringing that side of it out alone was exciting.
La Famiglia- What has the media not asked????
Aceyalone- Anything that can lead to the answer of me saying…Yo! Check this one out, this is what we are doing this season! We’re musicians! I think I try to fight the battle of hip hop fans that are stuck in their ways, that will hear a beat at 95 with the bass and snare and say, “okay, this is hip-hop”. It stopped growing somewhere down the line. And I’m definitely for an era that was more creative with hip-hop then we are now. I wish you could see this is dynamic here. Quit being so one-dimensional. Let’s make good music and experiment and take things to different levels.
La Famiglia- What was the first record that you bought?
Aceyalone- Ha-ha! The first record that I bought…I wonder if it should be the first record I bought or the first record that I acquired?
La Famiglia- Either one..
Aceyalone- I didn’t buy a record in till like 1985 or something …and that’s terrible, huh? Cause I acquired all my records before that. Well actually it was Run DMC’s second album. The first record that I acquired was, “Double Dutch Bus”. I just made a deal with somebody to get it when we were young kids.
La Famiglia- Have you thought about what you’re going to do next?
Aceyalone- I’m trying to balance it all out. When I do these experimental projects I like to balance it all out. I think the next album I’ll just hit with the one two. That 101 that I know, the basics…. ya know…. beats and rhymes.
